India made a brilliant start to their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign, defeating the USA by 29 runs in their opening match. The USA won the toss and elected to bowl first. India scored 161 runs for the loss of nine wickets in their 20 overs. In reply, the USA team could only manage 132 runs.
Powered by Suryakumar Yadav's unbeaten half-century and Mohammed Siraj's lethal bowling, India secured a resounding victory against the USA in their opening match of the T20 World Cup 2026. In the match played at Wankhede on Saturday, the USA won the toss and elected to bowl first. India, batting first, scored 161 runs for the loss of nine wickets in their 20 overs. In reply, the USA team could only manage 132 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their allotted overs.

The USA won the toss and elected to field first in this match. It seemed that India would pile up a huge score in their first match of the T20 World Cup, but they suffered setbacks from the very beginning. Abhishek Sharma and Shivam Dube were dismissed without scoring, while players like Rinku Singh, Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel returned to the pavilion cheaply. Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma batted well, but they could not convert their starts into big innings. However, Suryakumar Yadav stood firm at one end and remained unbeaten till the end.
Suryakumar scored an unbeaten 84 runs off 49 balls with the help of 10 fours and four sixes. This was his 25th T20 International half-century. The Indian captain shifted gears in the last five overs, which helped India score 67 runs in the last 30 balls, although they also lost three wickets during this period. Suryakumar also completed 1000 runs in T20s as a captain during this innings. Suryakumar scored 21 runs in Saurabh Netravalkar's last over, which helped India cross the 160-run mark.
Indian bowlers broke the back of the American batting lineup.
The American team, which came out to bat next, was thoroughly outplayed by the Indian bowlers. Milind Kumar (34), Sanjay Krishnamurthi (37), and Shubham Ranjane (37) were the only ones to put up a decent performance. Four other batsmen failed to reach double figures, while two batsmen couldn't even open their account. For India, Mohammed Siraj took three wickets, while Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel claimed two wickets each. Varun Chakravarthy also picked up one wicket.
