What a Night at the Wankhede!
Mumbai witnessed a match that cricket fans will talk about for years. On a night of pulsating drama, 499 runs were scored across 40 overs, including 34 sixes making it the most run-filled game in T20 World Cup history. In the end, nerves, experience, and the brilliance of Jasprit Bumrah saw India through.
India's Innings Samson Takes Control
England won the toss and had no hesitation in putting India in to bat at the chase-friendly Wankhede Stadium. It looked like a smart call but Sanju Samson had other ideas. Riding on Samson's blazing 89 and a string of rapid cameos from the middle order, India piled up a mammoth 253/7 the highest score by a team in a T20 World Cup knockout match.
Samson had eyes only for the boundary. He marched into the 80s with two more sixes, taking his personal haul to seven, before Will Jacks induced a miscue to deep cover. His innings of 89 off just 42 balls was simply sensational. It equalled the highest score by an Indian batter in a T20 World Cup knockout match, matching Virat Kohli's unbeaten 89 against West Indies in the 2016 semi-final.
Ishan Kishan (39 off 18), Shivam Dube (43 off 25), Hardik Pandya (27 off 12), and Tilak Varma (21 off 7) were the other notable contributors providing the explosive finishing touches that pushed India past the 250 mark. One moment that could have changed everything Harry Brook dropped an absolute sitter in the third over to reprieve Samson on just 15, leaving his bowler Jofra Archer frustrated and deflated. Brook himself later admitted it was a match-defining mistake.
And then there was Jasprit Bumrah — as inevitable as ever. Bumrah delivered a masterful spell, giving just 33 runs in his 4 overs, and his 18th over proved precious, conceding just 6 runs in front of the well-set Bethell and dangerous Sam Curran.
England's Chase Bethell's Magnificent Hundred
Chasing 254, England looked in serious trouble early. Phil Salt, Jos Buttler, and Harry Brook were all back in the dugout inside the first six overs. ICC Cricket Hardik Pandya dismissed Salt on the first ball of his spell, and Bumrah had Brook caught brilliantly by Axar Patel running backwards.
But then came Jacob Bethell and what an innings it was. His 105 from 48 balls was an innings for the ages, keeping England swinging for the fences in a heroically thwarted chase. ESPNcricinfo Bethell smashed a 19-ball fifty joint fastest in T20 World Cup history and went on to score the highest individual total in T20 World Cup knockout history.
